When I was going through a divorce I went to therapy.
I wanted clarity and direction because I was feeling bad about myself. This was 15 years ago, and my therapist said something that I will never forget...
“I bet being in the beauty industry is not easy. You surround yourself with others who are hyper focused on their looks.”
Interesting thought to chew on, right!?!
At first her statement made me feel defensive.
I love my clients.
My clients love me.
I do more than help people with their outer appearance.
I make my clients feel beautiful inside and out and this is why they are loyal to me.
But then, I took a deeper dive into her statement and realized that she might be onto something.
When your main working objective is to create beauty, it comes with some big responsibilities.
People expect a lot from us.
Clients want us to fix them, yet they don’t always take us seriously as professionals. They don’t always invest in our recommendations to get the results they desire. And, they don’t always follow instructions.
It’s easy as a beauty practitioner to beat yourself up because you get lost in trying to figure out who you’re supposed to be and how to be taken seriously.
Now here’s where it gets even more complicated than it was 15 years ago…
Social media sets extremely high expectations on how people are supposed to look. It would seem that we all need to look perfect all the time.
Beauty related posts on Instagram and Facebook are making our job even more demanding, yet still we aren’t always viewed as the experts we are.
Our clients are being bombarded with unrealistic views of beauty. And, our clients expect instant results yet, we know that instant results and creating beautiful skin simply don’t go hand-in-hand, but still... more pressure on us.
I don’t know about you, but I am tired of it.
Today, let your self-care be about not beating yourself up. Just for today, give yourself a break, do your best, trust your gut, suggest the most appropriate add-ons and home care products, and focus on being fully present for each client.
Then, see how you feel after that.
Pay close attention to how your clients respond when you show up with this centered and confident energy.
Now… From this point forward, be sure to stay true to your passion for this industry and fuel your marketing messages with your heart and your why.
Show up as a professional with high standards and know that when you do, you will be given the precious opportunity to deeply serve clients and gain the respect you deserve.
Here’s to turning off the noise and pressure of unrealistic expectations.
Here’s to a boost in your confidence.
Here’s to a genuine and authentic way to create a full schedule and gain tons of referrals.
Here’s to your success!
